How the UAE GPA Calculator Works (Cumulative GPA, College GPA, UAE GPA Scale)

The UAE GPA calculator above runs four modes because students in the UAE arrive at university through several distinct grading conventions. UAE 4.0 mode (the default) handles the plus/minus letter scale used at virtually every Commission for Academic Accreditation (CAA) accredited university, including UAEU (United Arab Emirates University), AUS (American University of Sharjah), AUD (American University in Dubai), Khalifa University, Zayed University, ADU (Abu Dhabi University), Ajman University, University of Dubai, Heriot-Watt Dubai, RIT Dubai, and NYU Abu Dhabi. HCT mode handles the simplified Higher Colleges of Technology A/B/C/D/F scale used at 16 federal campuses across the seven emirates. Percentage mode takes direct 0 to 100 numeric marks (useful when a transcript reports percentages without letter grades). IGCSE / A-Level mode converts British curriculum qualifications issued by the many British schools across the UAE into US 4.0 GPA equivalents for university admissions.

In every mode the math is the same credit-weighted average: each course\'s grade points multiplied by its credit hours produces quality points; quality points summed across courses divided by total credit hours produces the cumulative GPA. The result panel shows the CGPA on the 4.0 scale, the UAE percentage equivalent, the matching letter band (A through F), and an academic standing interpretation against the CAA-standard 2.0 minimum and Dean\'s List thresholds. What does GPA stand for? Grade Point Average, the standard cumulative academic metric used worldwide. This works as your college GPA calculator for UAE universities, a cumulative GPA tool for any UAE student tracking semester-by-semester progress, and a weighted average calculator for any combination of UAE university courses.

UAE University Grading Scale, GPA Grade Bands, and Academic Standing

The CAA standardises a 4.0 GPA scale across CAA-accredited UAE universities, but per-university details vary at the plus/minus boundaries and the percentage cutoffs. The canonical UAE plus/minus 4.0 scale below is used at UAEU, AUS, AUD, Khalifa, Zayed, ADU, Ajman, University of Dubai, and most private universities; HCT uses a simplified variant without plus/minus subdivisions:

  • A (Excellent): 90 percent and above, 4.0 GPA. The 4.0 is the highest grade point at every UAE university; some institutions (Khalifa, NYU AD) award an A plus internally but cap the 4.0 ceiling.
  • A minus to B minus (Very Good to Good): 77 to 89 percent, 2.7 to 3.7 GPA. Strong academic performance; B plus and above qualifies for most internal scholarships at UAEU and AUS.
  • C plus to C minus (Satisfactory): 67 to 76 percent, 1.7 to 2.3 GPA. The 2.0 (C) is the canonical passing grade for major courses at most UAE universities.
  • D plus to D (Pass): 60 to 66 percent, 1.0 to 1.3 GPA. Course credit awarded but typically not counted toward the major requirement; check your registrar\'s specific rule.
  • F (Fail): below 60 percent, 0.0 GPA. No credit issued; the course must be retaken to clear graduation requirements.

UAE Academic Standing Thresholds (Good Standing, Probation, Dean\'s List)

UAE universities apply consistent academic standing rules under CAA guidelines, with minor per-institution variation. The thresholds below match UAEU, AUS, Khalifa, Zayed, AUD, ADU, and HCT registrar handbooks:

  • Good Academic Standing: CGPA at or above 2.0. The CAA-standard minimum for continued enrollment at every UAE university.
  • Academic Warning: first semester below 2.0. The student is flagged but not yet on probation; advising mandatory.
  • Academic Probation: two or more semesters below 2.0. Course load capped; mandatory tutoring or academic recovery programme.
  • Dean\'s List: CGPA at or above 3.5 (3.6 at some institutions) with a minimum credit-hour load (typically 12 to 15 credits) and no F grades that semester.
  • Honours classifications at graduation: Cum Laude (3.5 to 3.69), Magna Cum Laude (3.7 to 3.89), Summa Cum Laude (3.9 and above). UAEU, AUS, AUD, Khalifa, and NYU AD apply this Latin honours system; Zayed and HCT use Distinction / High Honours / Highest Honours labels at similar thresholds.
  • Graduation minimum: CGPA at or above 2.0 at virtually every UAE university. Some programmes (Engineering at Khalifa, Medicine at UAEU and MBRU) require a higher 2.5 or 3.0 CGPA in the major.

How to Calculate GPA Out of 4 at a UAE University

Every UAE credit-hour university uses the same weighted-average GPA formula. Only the letter-to-points mapping differs between the standard plus/minus 4.0 scale and the HCT simplified scale.

UAE University GPA Formula
GPA = Sum(Grade Points x Credit Hours) Sum(Credit Hours)
Where:
  • Grade Points = numeric value of the letter grade (A=4.0, F=0.0 on the UAE plus/minus scale; A=4.0, F=0.0 on the HCT simplified scale; band-mapped value on the percentage scale; IGCSE / A-Level converted value on the British curriculum scale)
  • Credit Hours = the credit hours the course carries on your transcript (typically 3 for lecture courses at UAEU, AUS, Khalifa; 1 for lab sessions; 1 unit per IGCSE / A-Level subject)
  • Sum = total across every completed course
Example: A student at UAEU takes Calculus I (3 cr, A=4.0), English Composition (3 cr, B+=3.3), UAE Studies (3 cr, A-=3.7), and Islamic Culture (3 cr, B=3.0). Quality points: 4.0 x 3 + 3.3 x 3 + 3.7 x 3 + 3.0 x 3 = 12 + 9.9 + 11.1 + 9 = 42. Total credits: 12. Semester GPA = 42 / 12 = 3.50 (Cum Laude band, Dean's List at UAEU).

Two implementation details specific to UAE universities matter for accuracy. First, credit-hour weighting means a four-credit major course influences your CGPA roughly four times as much as a one-credit lab elective; verify each course\'s exact credit weight on the transcript or student portal before entering. Second, grade-replacement policy varies across institutions. UAEU, AUS, Khalifa, and Zayed let the higher attempt replace the earlier one for CGPA purposes (with the F still visible on the academic record); HCT and ADU generally average both attempts. Check your registrar handbook before entering retaken courses; the calculator above lets you omit the lower attempt if your university uses the replacement rule.

UAEU, AUS, Khalifa, Zayed, HCT and Other UAE University GPA Scales

UAEU Grading System (United Arab Emirates University)

United Arab Emirates University in Al Ain is the UAE\'s flagship federal university and applies the plus/minus 4.0 scale across all colleges. The UAEU grading scale runs A = 4.0 down to F = 0.0 with the standard plus/minus subdivisions; the minimum passing grade for a major course is C (2.0). Probation kicks in below 2.0 after 21 credit hours for batches from 2009 onwards (below 1.75 for older batches), and the Dean\'s List threshold is 3.6 CGPA. UAEU graduate programmes require a 3.0 minimum to remain in good standing. Source: UAEU Academics: Grading System.

AUS Grading System (American University of Sharjah)

American University of Sharjah uses the standard plus/minus 4.0 scale across its College of Arts and Sciences, College of Engineering, and School of Business. The AUS GPA calculator pattern reproduces the same credit-weighted formula. AUS publishes both semester GPA and cumulative GPA on Banner Self-Service; the Dean\'s List threshold is 3.5 with a minimum 12 credit-hour load. Graduation honours at AUS follow the Latin Cum Laude / Magna / Summa system at 3.5 / 3.7 / 3.9 cutoffs. Source: AUS Academic Information.

Khalifa University Grading System

Khalifa University in Abu Dhabi (merged in 2017 with the Petroleum Institute and Masdar Institute) applies the plus/minus 4.0 scale with similar cutoffs to UAEU and AUS. Khalifa\'s undergraduate handbook explicitly defines Distinction with Highest Honours, Distinction with High Honours, and Distinction at 3.9 / 3.7 / 3.5 thresholds (the Khalifa equivalent of Summa / Magna / Cum Laude). Graduate students at Khalifa must maintain a 3.0 CGPA minimum. Source: Khalifa University Undergraduate Catalog.

Zayed University Grading System

Zayed University (campuses in Abu Dhabi and Dubai) applies the standard UAE plus/minus 4.0 scale. ZU emphasises competency-based assessment alongside letter grades; transcripts show both the letter grade and the four learning outcome competency ratings (Approaching, Meeting, Exceeding, Distinguished). For GPA calculation purposes only the letter grade matters and the calculator above runs the standard formula. The ZU Dean\'s List threshold is 3.5; graduation honours follow Cum Laude / Magna / Summa.

HCT Grading System (Higher Colleges of Technology)

Higher Colleges of Technology applies a simplified A / B / C / D / F scale without plus/minus subdivisions. Each whole letter spans a 10-percent band: A (90 to 100, 4.0), B (80 to 89, 3.0), C (70 to 79, 2.0), D (60 to 69, 1.0), F (below 60, 0.0). The HCT minimum CGPA to remain in good standing is 2.0; graduation also requires 2.0 minimum for any HCT diploma or bachelor programme. Use the HCT mode above for HCT students; switching to UAE 4.0 mode will misreport HCT B grades as the lower B plus or B minus equivalent. Source: HCT Academic Policies Registry.

AUD, ADU, Ajman, University of Dubai, Heriot-Watt Dubai, RIT Dubai, NYU AD

American University in Dubai (AUD), Abu Dhabi University (ADU), Ajman University, University of Dubai, Heriot-Watt Dubai, RIT Dubai, and NYU Abu Dhabi all follow the same plus/minus 4.0 scale with minor variation at the plus/minus percentage cutoffs. RIT Dubai and NYU AD use their parent campus scales (RIT Rochester and NYU New York) directly. Heriot-Watt Dubai issues both the UK degree classification (First, 2:1, 2:2, Third) and the UAE 4.0 GPA on the transcript, since Heriot-Watt is a UK university operating a Dubai branch.

IGCSE, A-Level, and IB Conversion to UAE GPA

The UAE hosts roughly 50 percent of its K-12 students in British curriculum schools (Dubai College, GEMS, Repton, Brighton College, JESS, Kings, Cranleigh, Nord Anglia, Dwight, Foremarke). Students applying to UAE universities with IGCSE and A-Level grades need a 4.0 GPA equivalent for admissions. The IGCSE / A-Level mode in the calculator above runs the conversion subject by subject:

  • IGCSE grades: A star and A = 4.0, B = 3.5, C = 3.0, D = 2.5, E = 2.0, F and G = 1.0.
  • A-Level grades: A star = 4.0, A = 3.7, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, E = 0.7.
  • IB Diploma subjects (7-point scale): 7 = 4.0, 6 = 3.7, 5 = 3.0, 4 = 2.3, 3 = 1.7, 2 = 1.0, 1 = 0.0. The IB total score out of 45 also maps as a whole-certificate equivalent: 38 and above maps to roughly 3.9, 32 to 37 maps to 3.5, 24 to 31 maps to 3.0.

UAEU, AUS, AUD, Khalifa, and Zayed all accept IGCSE plus A-Level results directly for admissions and apply their own internal conversion table. The 4.0 estimate above lines up with the AACRAO and World Education Services (WES) standard conversions; for binding admissions decisions, consult the university\'s admissions office for their official scale. For students moving on to graduate school outside the UAE, the IGCSE / A-Level admissions GPA is rarely accepted; what counts is the undergraduate CGPA from the UAE university itself.

Convert UAE GPA to Percentage and US 4.0 for Graduate School

UAE university graduates applying to US, UK, Canadian, or Australian graduate programmes typically need their CGPA expressed on the destination country\'s scale. The percentage-to-4.0 mapping below is the conversion most international graduate programmes and credential evaluators apply for UAE transcripts (the UAE 4.0 scale is already US-compatible, so the conversion is mostly identity):

UAE percentageUAE letterUAE 4.0 GPAUS 4.0 GPA equivalent

For formal US graduate school applications, World Education Services (WES) generates an authoritative course-by-course US GPA from UAE transcripts (cost roughly USD 200 to 250 in 2026). The American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO) is the canonical reference for international credential evaluation in the US. Most US, Canadian, and UK graduate programmes accept the UAE 4.0 GPA directly without a third-party evaluation, since the CAA-standard scale is already US-compatible. For UK universities, the UAE 4.0 GPA also maps to the UK degree classification: 3.7 and above maps to First, 3.3 to 3.69 maps to 2:1, 2.7 to 3.29 maps to 2:2, and 2.0 to 2.69 maps to Third.

What Counts as a Good GPA at UAE Universities

On the UAE 4.0 scale, academic standing benchmarks follow a consistent pattern across CAA-accredited universities:

  • 4.0 GPA: Perfect cumulative GPA. Eligible for Summa Cum Laude at UAEU, AUS, AUD, Khalifa, and most private universities; Highest Honours at Zayed and HCT.
  • 3.5 GPA and above: Dean\'s List threshold at most UAE universities. Competitive for scholarship applications, internal awards, and graduate-school admission.
  • 3.0 GPA: Solid academic standing; meets the minimum threshold for most UAE graduate programmes and many international graduate programmes.
  • 2.5 GPA: Required for graduation in some demanding programmes (Engineering at Khalifa, Medicine at UAEU and MBRU); above the universal CAA minimum of 2.0.
  • 2.0 GPA: CAA-standard minimum for Good Academic Standing and graduation. Below 2.0 triggers academic probation at every CAA-accredited UAE university.
  • Below 2.0: Academic warning then probation. Course load is capped and mandatory advising or recovery programmes apply; sustained sub-2.0 performance leads to dismissal.

For UAE graduate school applications, a 3.0 CGPA from a UAE university is competitive for most domestic programmes; 3.5 and above for top international programmes (US, UK, Canadian, Australian). Scholarship eligibility (Mohamed bin Zayed scholarships, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum awards, Erasmus Plus, Chevening, Fulbright) typically requires 3.3 to 3.5 CGPA from a UAE university.

British and American Curriculum Schools in the UAE Feeding Into University

The UAE\'s K-12 sector is one of the most internationally diverse in the world. Roughly half of UAE students attend British curriculum schools (Dubai College, GEMS Wellington, Repton Dubai, Brighton College Dubai, JESS, Kings\' School Al Barsha, Cranleigh Abu Dhabi, Nord Anglia Dubai); another quarter attend American curriculum schools (American School of Dubai, American Community School Abu Dhabi, Universal American School Dubai); the rest split across IB World Schools, French (Lycée Français Jean Mermoz), Indian curriculum (CBSE / ICSE), Pakistani curriculum, and other national systems.

For UAE university admissions, each curriculum has its own conversion to the UAE 4.0 GPA. American curriculum schools issue a US 4.0 GPA directly which UAE universities accept without conversion. British schools issue IGCSE and A-Level grades which convert via the IGCSE / A-Level mode in the calculator above. IB schools convert IB Diploma subject grades via the 7-point IB scale (7 = 4.0, 6 = 3.7, etc.). Indian CBSE / ICSE schools convert percentage marks via the India GPA calculator. Pakistani schools convert via the Pakistan GPA calculator. The American School of Dubai GPA calculator pattern uses the standard US 4.0 scale with which the calculator above is already compatible.

This UAE GPA calculator estimates your CGPA on the standard UAE plus/minus 4.0 scale, the HCT simplified scale, the direct percentage scale, and the IGCSE / A-Level conversion using the credit-weighted average formula documented above. Universities apply institution-specific rules for grade replacement, supplementary assessments, credit transfers, and progression decisions; always verify against your programme regulations and your registrar\'s office. For US graduate school applications see the US GPA calculator for the 4.0 scale and consult World Education Services (WES) for the canonical credential evaluation report. For UK-affiliated UAE universities (Heriot-Watt Dubai, Middlesex Dubai) that issue both UK classifications and UAE 4.0 GPA, see the UK grade calculator for the degree classification details.

How to calculate GPA in UAE?
How to calculate GPA in UAE: at any CAA-accredited UAE university (UAEU, AUS, AUD, Khalifa, Zayed, ADU, Ajman University, University of Dubai, Heriot-Watt Dubai, RIT Dubai, NYU Abu Dhabi), divide your total quality points by total credit hours. Multiply each course's letter-grade points by its credit hours, sum the products, and divide by total credit hours attempted. The formula is GPA = Sum(Grade Points x Credit Hours) / Sum(Credit Hours). The UAE standard plus/minus 4.0 scale runs A=4.0, A-=3.7, B+=3.3, B=3.0, B-=2.7, C+=2.3, C=2.0, C-=1.7, D+=1.3, D=1.0, F=0.0. Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT) uses a simplified A/B/C/D/F scale without plus/minus subdivisions, and the calculator above includes a dedicated HCT mode.
How to calculate GPA out of 4?
A GPA out of 4 uses the standard UAE 4.0 scale used at virtually every CAA-accredited university: A = 4.0, A minus = 3.7, B plus = 3.3, B = 3.0, B minus = 2.7, C plus = 2.3, C = 2.0, C minus = 1.7, D plus = 1.3, D = 1.0, F = 0.0. Multiply each course's letter-grade points by its credit hours, sum the quality points, and divide by total credit hours attempted. The UAE mode in the calculator above runs this math live. For HCT students, the HCT mode uses the simplified 4.0 scale (A only at 90 to 100, B at 80 to 89, C at 70 to 79, D at 60 to 69, F below 60). For students entering with IGCSE or A-Level qualifications from a British school in the UAE, the IGCSE / A-Level mode converts each subject grade to a US 4.0 equivalent.
What is GPA in education?
GPA stands for Grade Point Average, the credit-weighted average of letter-grade points across every course on your transcript reported on a 0.0 to 4.0 scale. At UAE universities, GPA is the standard cumulative academic metric used for academic standing, scholarship eligibility, Dean's List honours, graduation classification (Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, Summa Cum Laude), and graduate-school applications. CGPA (Cumulative GPA) is the running GPA across all completed semesters; semester GPA covers only the current term. Both share the same credit-weighted formula. The Commission for Academic Accreditation (CAA) regulates UAE higher education and standardises the 4.0 scale across most private and federal universities.
What is GPA grade and how do letter grades convert to GPA?
A GPA grade is the numeric value of a letter grade on the 4.0 scale. At most UAE universities, the conversion is A = 4.0 (90 percent and above), A minus = 3.7 (87 to 89), B plus = 3.3 (83 to 86), B = 3.0 (80 to 82), B minus = 2.7 (77 to 79), C plus = 2.3 (73 to 76), C = 2.0 (70 to 72), C minus = 1.7 (67 to 69), D plus = 1.3 (63 to 66), D = 1.0 (60 to 62), F = 0.0 (below 60). Each course's GPA grade is multiplied by its credit hours to produce quality points; the cumulative GPA is total quality points divided by total credit hours. The percentage cutoffs match the UAEU, AUS, Khalifa, and Zayed registrar publications.
How to calculate GPA with IB grades or IGCSE?
For UAE university admissions, IGCSE grades from British schools across the UAE convert to a US 4.0 GPA as follows: A star and A = 4.0, B = 3.5, C = 3.0, D = 2.5, E = 2.0, F and G = 1.0. A-Level grades convert as A star = 4.0, A = 3.7, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, E = 0.7. IB Diploma scores convert by subject grade: 7 = 4.0, 6 = 3.7, 5 = 3.0, 4 = 2.3, 3 = 1.7, 2 = 1.0, 1 = 0.0. UAE universities admitting British school leavers (UAEU, AUS, AUD, Khalifa, Zayed, Heriot-Watt Dubai, Middlesex Dubai) typically generate an equivalent 4.0 admissions GPA from the highest five to eight IGCSE or A-Level subjects. The IGCSE / A-Level mode in the calculator above does this conversion subject by subject.
How do you calculate cumulative GPA with credits?
Cumulative GPA (CGPA) at a UAE university covers every credit-hour course on your transcript since enrollment, not just the current semester. List every course you have completed across all semesters, multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours, sum all quality points, and divide by the total credit hours attempted. UAEU, AUS, Khalifa, Zayed, AUD, ADU, and HCT all show a running CGPA after each semester on the student portal; this calculator reproduces that math for any combination of courses you enter above. To roll a per-semester GPA into a cumulative CGPA, multiply each semester's GPA by its credit-hour load, sum across all semesters, and divide by total credit hours; the simpler approach is to enter every course directly above, which avoids the rounding error that comes from chaining pre-rounded semester GPAs.
What is 2:1 in GPA at a UAE university?
A 2:1 (upper second-class) is a British degree classification commonly issued by UK-affiliated UAE universities such as Heriot-Watt Dubai, Middlesex Dubai, University of Birmingham Dubai, and the University of Wollongong in Dubai. A 2:1 maps to a UAE 4.0 GPA of roughly 3.3 to 3.7 (60 to 69 percent on the UK scale). A First (1st) maps to 3.7 and above (70 percent and above on the UK scale); a 2:2 (lower second-class) maps to 2.7 to 3.0 (50 to 59 percent); a Third maps to 2.0 to 2.7 (40 to 49 percent). Some UAE universities issue both the British classification and the US 4.0 GPA on the transcript; for graduate-school applications outside the UK system, convert the classification to the US 4.0 equivalent.
