How GPA Is Calculated on the Otago Grading Scale
The University of Otago calculates GPA using the New Zealand 9-point grading scale applied to every enrolled paper. The GPA is paper-point weighted: each paper contributes its grade points (0 to 9) multiplied by its paper point value. The sum of those weighted grade points is then divided by the total paper points enrolled to produce the cumulative Otago GPA. This is the formula Otago uses on the official academic transcript, available through the Otago eVision student portal.
At Otago, papers are measured in points rather than credit hours. A standard one-semester paper carries 18 points. A year-long paper, taught across both semesters, carries 36 points. Heavier research papers, dissertations, and full-year capstone modules carry 54 or 72 points. A standard 360-point bachelor's degree requires roughly twenty 18-point papers across three years. The exact point value for each paper is listed in the Otago paper catalogue and on your eVision transcript.
- Paper Points = the Otago point value of each paper (18 for a standard semester paper, 36 for a year-long paper, 54 or 72 for heavy research or dissertation papers)
- Grade Points = the 9-point Otago grading scale value of the letter grade (A+ = 9, A = 8, A- = 7, B+ = 6, B = 5, B- = 4, C+ = 3, C = 2, C- = 1, D = 0)
- Sum = total across all enrolled papers including failed papers (D = 0 grade points still adds paper points to the denominator)
Failed papers (D grade, 0 grade points) count toward the denominator but contribute nothing to the numerator. A D in an 18-point paper adds 18 points to the denominator while contributing 0 to the weighted sum, pulling the cumulative GPA down. Use the calculator above to model how each paper affects your GPA, and switch to Percentage mode if your eVision results are raw marks rather than letter grades.

Otago Grading Scale: A+ to D with Percentage Bands
The Otago grading scale is the New Zealand 9-point letter system. Percentage bands below are per the Otago Academic Calendar. C- (50 to 54 percent, grade point 1) is the minimum passing grade at most Otago undergraduate papers. A D (below 50 percent, grade point 0) is a fail and typically requires a resit or paper repeat. Some professional programmes apply higher minimum passing grades on prerequisite papers, so always check the regulations for your specific degree.
| Grade | Percentage Range | Grade Points | Description | US 4.0 (approx) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A+ | 90 to 100% | 9 | Exceptional | 4.00 |
| A | 85 to 89% | 8 | Excellent | 3.56 |
| A- | 80 to 84% | 7 | Very good | 3.11 |
| B+ | 75 to 79% | 6 | Good | 2.67 |
| B | 70 to 74% | 5 | Satisfactory | 2.22 |
| B- | 65 to 69% | 4 | Adequate | 1.78 |
| C+ | 60 to 64% | 3 | Pass, above minimum | 1.33 |
| C | 55 to 59% | 2 | Pass | 0.89 |
| C- | 50 to 54% | 1 | Minimum pass | 0.44 |
| D | 0 to 49% | 0 | Fail | 0.00 |
Otago also records a small number of non-graded outcomes: PT (Pass Terms, work satisfactory but exam not yet sat), DNC (Did Not Complete), and AEG (Aegrotat Pass for students unable to complete assessment for documented reasons). PT and AEG carry pass-equivalent status but no grade points and are excluded from GPA. DNC counts as a fail (0 grade points) with the paper points still in the denominator. See your AskOtago portal for the current classification of any non-letter grade on your record.
First Class Honours and Academic Recognition at Otago
The University of Otago classifies Honours degrees by GPA in the Honours year. First Class Honours requires a GPA of 7.0 or above on the Otago 9-point scale, equivalent to a consistent A- average. Second Class Honours Division I requires a GPA of 6.0 to 6.99. Second Class Honours Division II covers GPA 5.0 to 5.99. Third Class Honours sits at GPA 4.0 to 4.99. These classifications appear on the official Otago academic transcript and on the parchment for Honours degrees such as BA(Hons), BSc(Hons), BCom(Hons), and PGDip qualifications.
A GPA of 7.0 or above also unlocks the most competitive postgraduate scholarship opportunities at Otago. The University of Otago Doctoral Scholarship (NZD 28,000 per year plus fees) is awarded by ranked merit, so PhD applicants typically need a GPA well above the 7.0 First Class threshold to be competitive. The University of Otago Master's Scholarship and the Otago Distinction Scholarship for entering school leavers apply their own GPA and ranking criteria.
| Recognition | GPA Threshold | Grade Band | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| First Class Honours | 7.0 or above | A- average | Otago Honours classification |
| Second Class Honours Div I | 6.0 to 6.99 | B+ average | Otago Honours classification |
| Second Class Honours Div II | 5.0 to 5.99 | B average | Otago Honours classification |
| Third Class Honours | 4.0 to 4.99 | B- average | Otago Honours classification |
| Competitive PG scholarship band | 7.5 or above | A- to A average | Otago Doctoral and Master's Scholarships |
| Pass (no honours) | 2.0 to 3.99 | C to B- average | Passing standard, below honours |
For competitive entry to Otago's professional health programmes (MB ChB Medicine, BDS Dentistry, BPharm Pharmacy), the relevant cut-off is not the cumulative GPA but rather rank within the Health Sciences First Year (HSFY) admission pool. HSFY uses a weighted score combining specific prerequisite paper grades with the UCAT entrance test. The cumulative GPA on this calculator does not predict HSFY ranking but is useful for postgraduate and international application contexts.
Convert Otago GPA to the US 4.0 Scale
When applying to graduate programmes in the United States, Canada, or other 4.0-scale countries, you will need to convert your Otago GPA. The standard linear conversion is:
US GPA = (Otago GPA / 9.0) x 4.0
The table below shows the converted value at each Otago grade point:
| Otago Grade | Otago Grade Points | US 4.0 Equivalent | Classification Band |
|---|---|---|---|
| A+ | 9.0 | 4.00 | Competitive scholarship range |
| A | 8.0 | 3.56 | Strong First Class |
| A- | 7.0 | 3.11 | First Class Honours threshold |
| B+ | 6.0 | 2.67 | Second Class Div I threshold |
| B | 5.0 | 2.22 | Second Class Div II threshold |
| B- | 4.0 | 1.78 | Third Class Honours threshold |
| C+ | 3.0 | 1.33 | Pass |
| C | 2.0 | 0.89 | Pass |
| C- | 1.0 | 0.44 | Minimum pass |
| D | 0.0 | 0.00 | Fail |
These are linear approximations. For official US graduate-school applications, most institutions require a course-by-course evaluation from WES (World Education Services), ECE, or a comparable accredited credential evaluator. WES evaluations typically place Otago grades within 0.1 to 0.2 GPA points of the linear estimate above. The calculator on this page computes the US 4.0 equivalent automatically alongside your Otago GPA.
Otago Grading Scale vs Other New Zealand Universities
Otago is part of the New Zealand 9-point GPA family used at all eight NZ universities. The letter scale and grade point mapping are identical across Otago, Auckland (UoA), Massey, AUT, Lincoln, Canterbury, Victoria University of Wellington, and Waikato. The differences are administrative: each university applies its own paper-point or course-point system, and honours thresholds vary slightly. The table below compares the major NZ institutions.
| University | GPA Scale | Paper / Course Points | First Class Honours | Top Award |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| University of Otago | 9-point | 18 per semester paper | GPA 7.0+ | Otago Distinction, Doctoral Scholarship |
| University of Auckland | 9-point | 15 per semester course | GPA 7.0+ | Dean's Honours (GPA 8.0+) |
| Victoria University of Wellington | 9-point | 15 to 30 per course | GPA 7.0+ | Victoria Honours |
| Massey University | 9-point | 15 per semester course | GPA 7.0+ | Massey Scholar award |
| University of Canterbury | 9-point | 15 to 30 per course | GPA 7.0+ | UC Senior Scholarship |
| AUT (Auckland University of Technology) | 9-point | 15 per semester paper | GPA 7.0+ | Vice-Chancellor's Award |
| Lincoln University | 9-point | 15 to 30 per course | GPA 7.0+ | Lincoln Scholar status |
| University of Waikato | 9-point | 15 to 30 per paper | GPA 7.0+ | Waikato Honours |
For Otago students applying to graduate programmes at other NZ universities (for example, a postgraduate diploma at Auckland or a master's at Victoria), the 9-point Otago GPA is directly comparable. For international applications, request a credential evaluation rather than relying on a self-reported conversion. For broader country coverage, see the New Zealand GPA calculator hub which surfaces the right tool for each NZ university and links the Otago, Auckland, and AUT spokes.
Otago Grade Calculator Tips for Common Scenarios
The calculator on this page handles the three most common Otago grading scale scenarios: a single-semester GPA snapshot, a cumulative degree GPA, and a target GPA forecast for an Honours year. For the semester snapshot, enter only the papers from one semester (typically four to five 18-point papers totalling 72 to 90 points). For the cumulative GPA, enter every paper from your full degree including pass and fail outcomes. For a forecast, enter your enrolled but not-yet-graded papers with their expected letter grades to see your projected end-of-year GPA.
When forecasting eligibility for the Otago Doctoral Scholarship or Master's Scholarship, target the 7.5+ band (visible as the rightmost zone on the threshold bar in the result panel). When forecasting eligibility for First Class Honours, target 7.0+. Remember that selection committees look beyond raw GPA, weighing your research proposal, references, and 400-level paper grades more heavily than the cumulative undergraduate GPA. The calculator helps you understand the GPA component; the rest of your application is a separate conversation with your departmental postgraduate coordinator at Otago.
